Sheffield markets could soon be entering the digital world as councillors vote on plans tomorrow to develop online shopping for local markets.
The proposals, put forward by Liberal Democrat councillors, follow work on a virtual companion for Kirkgate Market in Leeds.
The project, currently under development, will allow shoppers to visit stalls, ‘meet’ traders and buy produce – and then collect their purchases later.
Local Liberal Democrats want to see Sheffield City Council work on a similar plan for the city. The proposal will be debated and voted on at tomorrow’s Full Council meeting (Wed 2nd Jul, 14:00).
Cllr Simon Clement-Jones, local Liberal Democrat Councillor for Beauchief and Greenhill, who is proposing the motion, said:
“As Liberal Democrats we want to support businesses in the city and as a Council we should be willing to look at innovative ways to do that. Online shopping is just one of the numerous ways we can help bring market traders into the 21st century.
“Tomorrow’s vote will be a real test of the commitment of Council bosses to supporting local businesses – will they be willing to back an initiative that could provide a real boost to dozens of independent traders?”
