Local campaigners are celebrating after the future of a prized local green space has been cleared up. Gulleys Wood Meadow near Beauchief Abbey had apparently been given to a local golf club by someone claiming to have acquired it from the Council, prompting fears among local community groups that it could be closed to the public or redeveloped.

Following action by local councillor Simon Clement-Jones and Lib Dem campaigner Richard Shaw, it has been established that the meadow had been transferred to the golf club in error and that it remains in Council ownership.

Richard said:
“I am relieved that this confusion has been resolved, as are many local people. The local environment group has invested a great amount of time and money in safeguarding and managing the meadow, which is home to bats and other wildlife.”
