Lib Dems force Council U-turn over recycling centre opening hours

Sheffield City Council have been forced to reconsider their unpopular changes to waste recycling centre services.

Liberal Democrat councillors called for a review of recycling centre opening hours in June but Labour refused to accept there was a problem, despite rising incidents of fly-tipping in our area.

Labour’s town hall bosses have now agreed to increase the opening hours at Blackstock Road recycling centre. Their previous decision to cut opening hours to four days a week meant local residents have had to put up with long queues, and fly-tipping has greatly increased.

The Liberal Democrats are committed to building a stronger economy and a fairer society – that’s why we have been campaigning against Labour’s unfair changes to opening times. It isn’t fair to local people that a recycling centre in Labour’s favoured areas remains open 7 days a week – yet Blackstock Road was shut 3 days a week despite being the busiest site in Sheffield.

I am glad the council have listened to our campaign and performed a U-turn on these poorly thought out plans.

The changes mean the Blackstock Road site will now be open 6 days a week – every day except Wednesday.
